Styling, Identity & The Power of Visual Storytelling

An interview with Mari Safarian.

Stylist & Executive Producer | Paris.

1. What’s the most underrated shift happening in fashion right now that people are sleeping on?

Intellectual Minimalism

Minimalism is evolving—moving away from clean, structured silhouettes to something more unexpected. Instead of rigid forms and extreme shapes, we see asymmetry, offbeat proportions, raw draping, and unconventional cuts. The result? Effortless yet striking looks. Classic pieces with a twist: a tailored jacket with an intentional slouch, a dress with an unexpected fold, fabrics that seem “off” in the best way possible. It’s all about subtle, refined details that might not be obvious to everyone—but that’s what makes them special.

2. Are there any underground brands right now that deserve the spotlight?

Ambush – A Tokyo-based brand inspired by the raw energy of Shibuya. The latest collection leans into an underground aesthetic—think fur-trimmed bombers and track pants with lace.

Kiko Kostadinov – The London-based designer known for his complex, futuristic details and architectural approach to fashion.

Cherry World – A fresh new label founded by photographer Glen Luchford and Josh Levin.

3. And likewise, any mainstream brands that you feel are killing it right now?

Prada
– A balance of classicism and intellectual experimentation. Sharp-shouldered blazers, deconstructed trench coats, and unexpected textures—bold yet effortlessly wearable.

Diesel
– More than just denim. A playground for experimentation—oversized logos, distorted proportions, and a grungy, worn-in effect that feels powerful without being overly trend-driven.

Bottega Veneta – Under Matthieu Blazy, the brand embraces “quiet luxury.” Think ultra-high-quality pieces with understated elegance—leather shirts, woven accessories, and knitwear that melts onto the body.

Acne Studios – A masterclass in intelligent mainstream fashion. Effortlessly cool yet technically sophisticated, with unusual but wearable silhouettes and an ongoing play with textures.

Loewe
– Jonathan Anderson is redefining the art of transformation. Everyday staples morph into avant-garde statements: melted heels, optical-illusion knitwear, and denim that looks painted on—fashion that thrives both on the runway and in real life.

Miu Miu – Back at the top thanks to its seamless blend of femininity and rawness. Mini skirts that feel borrowed, structured coats with a casual slouch, and knitwear that looks perfectly lived-in—it’s relaxed yet
undeniably high-status.

4. How can emerging brands use styling to elevate their visuals without a huge budget?

Location over Set Design:

  • Brutalist concrete backdrops for minimalist collections.
  • Natural textures (sand, wood, stone) for an eco-conscious or arthouse vibe.
  • Vintage cafés and old courtyards for a retro aesthetic.

Detail-Driven Campaigns:

  • Macro shots of fabric (stitches, folds, textures).
  • Unconventional angles (low shots, reflections).
  • Dynamic movement (billowing fabric, candid motion).

Raw & Real:

  • Film or phone photography for intimacy and authenticity.
  • Real people instead of models—diverse faces, unconventional beauty.
  • Unscripted moments—laughter, imperfections, genuine energy.

5. What’s a personal style mistake you see over and over again?

Wearing all the latest trends at once often means losing your identity. Style isn’t about fashion—it’s about who you are.

6. Styling is just another form of storytelling. What’s one overlooked detail that can completely change the narrative of a look?

The Power of Accessories & Beauty

Accessories can completely shift an outfit’s mood—either simplifying or complicating a look. The same goes for hair and makeup. Picture this: a hyper-feminine dress, but with pale, almost ghostly makeup—suddenly, the vibe is eerie rather than light-hearted. It’s all in the details.

7. When you're pulling references for a shoot, where do you always start?

I always start with the mood—capturing the exact vibe is everything.

8. If someone wants a wardrobe that actually lasts, where should they invest first?

A Transformer Wardrobe

Start with your lifestyle, then build from there. Regardless of where you live, investing in quality outerwear—like a trench coat, a leather jacket, or a well-tailored coat—is key to any functional wardrobe.

9. Which city right now is quietly shaping the next big style movement?

For me, it’s Seoul and Copenhagen. Seoul is where traditional Korean aesthetics meet cutting-edge innovation, gaining global attention. Copenhagen, on the other hand, champions sustainability and minimalism with a fresh perspective. Shanghai’s experimental scene and Mexico City’s bold use of color and craftsmanship are also worth watching.

10. What’s one cultural moment that completely changed how you see fashion?

One of the most defining fashion shifts for me was the rise of streetwear as a global force. Brands from the underground started competing with luxury houses, introducing a new visual language—logomania, sporty silhouettes, and collaborations with artists and musicians. Social media gave streetwear its power: trends no longer emerge from the runway but from the streets and Instagram.

11. The future of fashion is…. A fusion of technology, sustainability, and individuality—no doubt about it.

12. Most exciting brand right now?

Kiko Kostadinov – Intellectual Avant-Garde

  • One of the most compelling designers of his generation, known for his architectural approach and textile innovation.
  • His womenswear line, led by twin sisters Laura and Deanna Fanning, blends futurism, vintage influences, and Japanese aesthetics.
  • The Kiko x ASICS sneakers are a cult favourite among fashion insiders.

Ottolinger – The Grunge of the Future

  • A Berlin-based label redefining glamour.
  • Raw edges, scorched fabrics, and asymmetry—like clothing from a post-apocalyptic world.
  • Loved by Rihanna, Doja Cat, and Björk.

Courrèges – Retro-Futurism 2024

  • The revived ‘60s French brand is now leading the charge in tech-inspired fashion.
  • Clean lines, vinyl textures, and a space-age aesthetic—updated for the modern era.

13. The one piece in your wardrobe that you'll never get rid of?

Shirts. Always.

14. Best-dressed city in the world?

Copenhagen: A Love Affair

Copenhagen is the perfect balance of style and taste—not just in fashion, but in architecture and food. A truly inspiring city.

15. A designer that deserves way more hype

Rokh (Rok Hwang) – A Korean designer with a background at CELINE, known for deconstructed, layered minimalism. His jackets with detachable sleeves redefine versatility.

Craig Green – A London-based designer bridging the gap between fashion and art. Highly respected within the industry, though still underappreciated by the mainstream.

16. A trend that needs to die immediately?

Logomania.
